5.1 Constructing the System

5.1.1 Construction

The demonstration system is mainly composed by three stations. They are named CAM station, FADL station and MAGIC station after their special features. Figure 5.1.1 describes the whole architecture of the system.

CAM Station
Its function is to run CAD/CAM applications, manufacturing process design applications, FADL generation processes, operation state remote monitoring applications, database applications. The CAM station is assumed to be located in designers' sections in the factory.
FADL Station
Its function is to control "MACHINE #1". It contains the FADL Interpreter and FADL EIA translator. The FADL station receives FADL code from the CAM station via Ethernet, then generates a code set of motion and sequence. The code set is transferred to MELDASMAGIC card, "MACHINE #1" which has three servo controlling motors. FADL code controls both motion and sequence. A remote monitoring broadcaster is also available.
MAGIC Station
Its function is to control "MACHINE #2". MAGIC station receives EIA code from CAM station via Ethernet. EIA code is transferred to MELDASMAGIC card. "MACHINE #2" is a real machining center. A remote-monitoring broadcaster is available.

5.1.2 Networking

The ethernet network is another key part of the system (Figure 0.0.2). The network in this system is composed of commercial 10BASE-T 8 port HUB and ISA Network Adapter on each station. There are no special parts.

5.1.3 Open System Application

When demonstrating at this time, merits seen from the viewpoint of the "open system" are as follows.

The MELDASMAGIC PC board operates on Windows NT and OS/2, the two best 32-bit personal-computer OS.
Sharing of data base by way of network. The data base can be accessed by the application of conventional spread-sheet software, e.g Microsoft Excel.
Remote process monitoring.
